Cotabato City’s official entry to the float design competition of the 2009 Aliwan Festival placed second in the tight race for the country’s most colorful display of craftsmanship and culture.

Called the LEMBA, the float consisted of an array of Magindanawn decorations most of which were hand woven from native materials.

Bai Sandra Sema, chairperson of the Cotabato City Tourism Council, said that the float captured the elegance of Magindanawn royalties. “The lemba showed the way the royalties live even to the modern times, and this continuity of traditional ways impressed the viewers and led to the float’s bagging a distinguished place among many equally impressive entries,” she said.

The 20-man delegation responsible for the making of the float won P250,000 and a trophy.

This year’s Aliwan Fiesta 2009 was held on April 23-25. Aside from the Float Design, it also featured competitions in Festival Streetdance and Festival Queen (Reyna ng Aliwan).  The three-day event culminated in a grand parade that kicked off in front of the Aliw Theater, CCP Complex and winded up at Quirino Grandstand where a star-studded awarding ceremony capped the festival.

In the Float Design competition, the Abel Iloko of Laoag,Ilocos Norte scored its second straight victory while Paghidaet's Dinagyang float (Iloilo) emerged third.

Two years ago, Cotabato City’s entry to Reyna ng Aliwan also won second place.
