Butuan –A series of power interruptions was experienced in Butuan since last week for two hours on rotation basis in different areas serviced by the Agusan del Norte Electric Cooperative (ANECO).

But today, Butuan and other provinces in the whole of Mindanao under the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines- Mindanao System Operations had a 4-hour blackout starting at 10:30 in the morning disrupting major business establishments.

Maximo Adiong, Head of National Grid Corporation of the Philippines, Mindanao System Operations issued a bulletin informing NGCP in some provinces that a load curtailment and load shedding schedule took effect due to generation insufficiency which brought about by the shutdown and non-availability of generating units.

Adiong clarified, that this is because of NGCP’s on-going preventive maintenance, the lack of water in Lake Lanao in Lanao del Sur and Pulangi River which is Mindanao’s two major sources of hydroelectric power have reached on a critical level and due to critical loading of Pulangi 4, Kibawe 138kv lines 1 and 2.

The daily load curtailment schedule will continue to be in effect until February 28, 2010 however, the curtailment schedule for the day according to Adiong would be adjusted or it may be lifted if and when the system conditions warrants.

The estimated curtailment level is based on the projected demand and available generation capability.

“The curtailment schedule commence at 10:30 AM daily, unless there is a contrary order,” added Maximo Adiong, Head of Mindanao System Operations.
It was further announced that the the Unit 2 of the Agus hydroelectric power plant in Iligan City and the second unit of the Mindanao coal-fired power plant which produces 110 megawatts has been shutdown.

While the outage of Unit 5 of the Agus hydroelectric power plant in Lanao del Sur has been reduced by 28 megawatts (MW).
