March 10, 2011 BUTUAN – The newly organized Special Weapons and Tactics (S.W.A.T.) Team placed a higher emphasis on training, sending members to General Santos City to undergo rigid training in addition to what they have learned at the Regional Special Training Unit in Santiago, Agusan del Norte. Training included physical fitness, hostage negotiations, marksmanship, close quarter battle, snipping and rappelling. Butuan City Police Station 1 Commander Police Supt Joseph Boquiren said, the SWAT Team composed of 24 highly trained men of BCPO will be deployed during incidents like hostage rescue, counter terrorist operations, providing assistance on arrest and search warrants, resolving high risk situations and other police operations. It was also learned that initially, the city government allocated 480,000 pesos in support for the basic need provisions for the SWAT Team that consists of combat shoes, camouflage uniforms and duffle bags. As of the moment only assault rifles were being provided by the PNP as one of the basic gears of the SWAT unit but it was assured that more issuances will be given in the coming months with counter parting from LGU Butuan and Congressional office of the Honorable Jose Aquino II for the purchase of necessary equipment and vests. Police Inspector Christian Rafols, Team Leader of BCPO’s SWAT Team declared that they are ready to face high risk operations that may arise despite the absence of high powered gears used by SWAT Teams in Manila or other part of the regions. Showcasing their ability, a hostage taking situation was simulated at the city hall ground on March 9, 2011 by members of Butuan City Police Office SWAT Team with the presence of Mayor Ferdinand Amante Jr and City Police Director Police Senior Supt. Jose Carillo. In his speech, Mayor Ferdinand Amante Jr. said, “This afternoon, we are trying to challenge the PNP to have people in uniform with integrity and this will be giving us quality service.” Mayor Amante lauded the newly formed SWAT Team of the city and pledged his support taking into consideration the importance of knowing that Butuan residents can sleep soundly and there is a new group of special police who will respond to any crisis situation. Next to SWAT Team, BCPO will soon establish a quality service lane to cater the needs of the public effectively and without delay. (striker_jem)
